Discussion Question

1.) Discuss your favorite cartoon/picture from the novel. What is significant about it? What does it reveal about Junior and hit situation? Why do you think the author includes these throughout the book/

My favorite cartoon/picture from the novel is on (pg. 182). I like this picture because you get a visual picture as well as a mental picture of how Junior is feeling, emotionally and physically. The picture is significant because Junior is now attending an all white’s school and playing on the basketball team for Reardon High School, which is playing against his old school from the reservation and his best friend Rowdy is playing against him, so Junior doesn’t know how to feel about his situation. Junior doesn’t know if he should act white or Indian. Junior feels both. The picture is revealing his good and bad side, a part of Junior wants to beat them and the other part wants them to win. I think the Author includes these pictures throughout the book so that the readers have some kind of expression and the reader can get more of a feel for the characters.

True Diary

True Diary
My first impression of Junior is that he likes to stay close to home, he has a great attitude about all of his health problems and he doesn’t let that get in the way of his everyday life. Junior sees himself as a tall capital L shaped boy and his head so big that little Indian skulls orbit around it. People on the rez see Junior as a retard. I never owned a diary. I think Junior keeps a diary because it’s his way of expressing his feelings. My life boat is my daughter, my husband because life wouldn’t be the same without them and myself because I am strong willed, determined, motivated and love life. The quote I chose is “And you’re a bright and shining star, too,” he said. “You’re the smartest kid in the school. And I don’t want you to fail. I don’t want you to fade away. You deserve better.” (Found on pg. 40) I liked this quote because Junior’s teacher Mr. P believes in Junior and he wants him to make something of himself.
